Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture

Founded in 1916, the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, or MAC, preserves the culture and history of the Northwest. The museum houses various exhibits and artifacts, and whether you're new to the Spokane area or have lived here for a while, our real estate agents highly recommend a visit. Here are some of the upcoming events and exhibits most worth checking out.

  • Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence
This beautifully artistic exhibit will be on display through April 30, 2023. Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence features the beaded creations of the Ubuhle women of South Africa. Each piece of beadwork is created on black fabric and is worn as headscarves and skirts.

This exhibit includes stunning examples of beadwork and teaches about its cultural significance. The Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum in Washington, D.C., curated and developed the collection.

  • Dancing With Life: Mexican Masks
Dancing With Life: Mexican Masks will be featured at the MAC until April 16, 2023. This exhibit features 54 different masks, all of which were made to be worn in traditional Mexican dances. Each mask depicts something different.

This exhibit was curated by Pavel Shlossberg of Gonzaga University. It offers unique insight into a cultural tradition that is becoming less common today.

  • Campbell House
Admission to the MAC includes admission to Campbell House, a preserved home from the 1910s. As you tour the home, you will learn about daily life and community involvement in this era.

Amasa and Grace Campbell owned the home, and some of the exhibits teach you more about their lives. Grace was a progressive woman for her time and was quite involved in several charitable organizations. You can take a self-guided tour of the Campbell House Tuesday - Sunday between 12:00 and 4:00 pm.

  • Humaira Abid: Searching for Home
Humaira Abid: Searching for Home will be open from April 1 - August 6, 2023. This exhibition of artwork includes hand carvings and wood crafts that call attention to the struggles of female refugees.

This exhibit is praised not only for its content but also for the talent that was required to create the beautiful woodcarvings. The three-dimensional creations make the work feel more life-like and personal.

  • The Wyeths: Three Generations
Open from May 13 - August 20, 2023, The Wyeths: Three Generations is an exhibit featuring the artwork of three successive generations of a family. The earliest pieces were created by N.C. Wyeth. Then, you'll see a collection of pieces made by his five children. Finally, admire the work of N.C. Wyeth's grandson, Jamie, who painted portraits of extended family members.

This collection includes 74 paintings in total. It offers a unique perspective on talent and artistic vision as they run in families. The exhibit belongs to the Bank of America Art in Our Communities Programs and is being hosted by the MAC for a time.
